Humanities Topography

The topography of the humanities
(Hypothetical map created by gen-AI [Claude Opus 5.5])

An interpretive model of how U.S. humanities institutions, labor, money, governance and publics are proportioned and connected across sectors. Sphere size is institutional mass; the terrain rises with the vertical axis and glows where mass concentrates. Positions are informed estimates for thinking with, not measurements.

elevation = vertical axis
concentration

Built as a conceptual instrument. Each node's coordinates on nine dimensions are judgment calls informed by public reporting (Humanities Indicators, AAUP faculty data, NEH and IMLS grant actions in 2025, publisher AI-licensing deals, book-challenge tallies) and should be argued with. Moving any axis re-sorts the same institutions under a different question.
